3 Easy Options for Teaching Core Vocabulary Digitally

Sharing is caring!

core vocabulary digital materials

Do you love teaching core vocabulary as much as I do? That’s why I am going to convince you that teaching core vocabulary digitally is the way to go! I have written blog posts about materials I love to use in my classroom to teach core vocabulary. During this big wave of using more digital products I found that these materials needed that same change! Over the past few years, I’ve been using Boom Cards in my classroom to help my students learn a variety of things.

Core Vocabulary Boom Cards

The more I used BOOM cards, the more I realized how great this resource is, so I started to create my own BOOM cards. I wanted to make BOOM cards that fit the needs of my students using core vocabulary.

I found that many of my students were struggling with core vocabulary words. These are words that many of us use in our day to day communication. And they also struggled with reading those words in simple sentences, so I decided to create some BOOM decks to practice those skills.

If you’re interested in the core vocabulary BOOM cards, which are like interactive flashcards, check out this link. If you’re interested in BOOM cards where students can read core vocab words in simple sentences, keep on reading.

Digital Core Vocabulary Adapted Books

My Digital Core Vocabulary Adapted Books are a bundle of 34 decks of BOOM cards, each including a ten page adapted book for the vocab words. For example, if the students are doing the deck for the word “all”, there will be ten pages of simple sentences where students read the word “all” in the sentences. There is the option for students to read the words independently, or they can click on the icon to have the words read for them. This is a great function to model fluency during reading.

The words included in this bundle include: all, big, close, come, do, down, eat, exit, finish, go, help, I, in, jump, know, look, like, little, more, no/not, on/off, out, open, put, play, quiet, ready, stop, turn, up, very, want, you, zero.

So here’s how it works. First, the computer will read the simple sentence for the student. For example “The dog is big.” There is a question asked right after the sentence, “What is the dog?” On the right side of the screen, there are three labeled images. The students will have to decide which image best answers the question. In this case, students will have to choose the image labeled “Big”.

If the students are unable to read the labels independently, they can click on the speaker icon and have the words read for them. Then they can select their answer and click submit. If they get their answer correct, BOOM will move onto the next card. If they make a mistake, BOOM will give an audible “Whoops” sound and students can try again.

And just in case you wanted to see inside this take a look at this video:

Why Should You Use Boom?

BOOM is great for giving audio and visual feedback. I love that students are able to try multiple times. BOOM also records student answers so the teacher can look back to check for understanding. Can you tell that I love BOOM? Do you have any BOOM resources that you love? If so, share them below so others can easily find them.
