Respectfully… not enough. Not even close. Because

Respectfully… not enough. Not even close.
Because fairness was never about giving every student the exact same thing.

Fairness is making sure each student gets what they need to access learning, participate, and be successful.

Accommodations are not special treatment.
They are not shortcuts.
They are not “extra.”
They are supports that help level the playing field for students who would otherwise be at a disadvantage.

And I’m never going to be the teacher who withholds something a student needs just because someone else doesn’t understand it.

That’s not fairness.
That’s convenience dressed up as fairness.

Sometimes the most fair thing you can do in a classroom is explain that different students need different supports and that’s okay.

Because in special ed, our job is not to make everything look equal.

Our job is to make sure students can actually access what’s being taught.

So no… you couldn’t pay me enough to stop honoring accommodations just to make other people more comfortable.

My students deserve better than that.

Absolutely, because nothing says “team collaboration” like leaving an IEP meeting with 7 new responsibilities, 3 follow-up emails, 2 data sheets to create, and one fresh reason to stare at the wall in silence. 😅

Listen… I will always do what needs to be done to support my students. That part is not up for debate. If my student needs it, we’re figuring it out.

But also?

When the team starts tossing out “great ideas” like I’m not the one who has to actually create, prep, track, teach, print, model, document, and somehow fit it into a schedule that was already hanging on by a thread… yeah, suddenly my exit strategy gets real strong. 😂

Like yes, let’s support the student.

But let’s also acknowledge that every “quick little addition” is usually five extra tasks for the teacher who is already carrying half the building on her back.

So if I start wrapping that meeting up a little faster than usual… just know it’s not because I don’t care.
It’s because I care and I know my plate is one suggestion away from becoming a full-blown buffet.

You do not have to accept everything just because it is “part of the job.” 💛⁠

You are allowed to speak up about things that do not sit right with you.⁠
You are allowed to question systems that are not serving students well.⁠
You are allowed to set boundaries around what is unrealistic, unhealthy, or unsustainable.⁠
And you are allowed to want better for yourself and for the students you serve.⁠
⁠
Being a caring teacher does not mean saying yes to everything.⁠
It does not mean staying silent when something feels wrong.⁠
And it does not mean sacrificing your peace, your values, or your well-being just to prove how committed you are.⁠
⁠
You can be deeply passionate about teaching and still say,⁠
“This is not okay.”⁠
“This is not what students need.”⁠
“This is not something I can continue to carry.”⁠
⁠
Advocating for yourself does not make you difficult.⁠
It makes you honest.⁠
It makes you aware.⁠
And sometimes, it makes you the exact person your students need most.⁠
⁠
Because teachers who know their worth, protect their peace, and stand firm in what matters are the ones who help create real change.⁠
⁠
So no, you do not have to just accept it.⁠
Not if it is harming you.⁠
Not if it is harming your students.⁠
Not if deep down you know there has to be a better way.⁠

…and oh yeah, somewhere in there, we’re also supposed to teach children. 🙃⁠

Like yes, that tiny little part of the job. The actual reason we are all here.⁠

Sometimes it feels like teaching has become 47 side quests wrapped around the one thing we came to do in the first place.⁠

And somehow we’re expected to do it all with a smile, no bathroom break, and a pencil that barely works.⁠
⁠
We love our students. We show up for them every single day. But let’s not pretend the workload isn’t absolutely unhinged.⁠

Being a teacher and investing in your classroom is real-life serious—because half the time we’re filling gaps with our own dollars just to make learning work. But I’m not gonna lie… I’ve had that Schitt’s Creek moment where I’m standing there wishing our wonderful government would just let us write it ALL off, no questions asked. 😂

Because if it’s for the kids, for the classroom, for behavior supports, for sensory tools, for literally keeping the ship afloat… it feels like it should count, right?
