Oh, there are so many things admin or our school boards think are gifts to teachers, but in reality, they just make us roll our eyes.

Here are a few:

“A Jeans Day!” – Oh wow, I get to wear jeans while still drowning in paperwork, managing behaviors, and running on five hours of sleep? Life-changing.

“A Pizza Party as a Thank You!” – Because nothing says ‘we appreciate your endless hard work’ like one lukewarm slice of pizza… that you barely have time to eat.

“A New Initiative That Will ‘Make Teaching Easier’” – Ah yes, yet another program we have to implement without training, resources, or time to do it properly. Fantastic.

“More PD Sessions on Self-Care” – You know what would really help? Not needing self-care because we actually have manageable workloads.

“A ‘Fun’ Staff Meeting” – If it’s still a meeting, it’s not fun. Period.

“A New Curriculum With No Input From Teachers” – Because who better to decide what works in the classroom than people who haven’t been in one for years?

“Extra Duties to ‘Build Community’” – Because nothing strengthens a school community like making already-overworked teachers do more unpaid work.

“Mandatory Team-Building Activities” – Oh great, instead of catching up on grading or prepping for the next day, I get to do trust falls with my coworkers.

As teachers, we all face tough moments, but they shape us into the educators we become. One experience that stands out for me was during my first few years teaching in a self-contained classroom. I had a class of students with varying needs, and while I was passionate about helping them, there were days when it felt like I wasn’t making progress.⁠

I remember feeling overwhelmed, trying to balance individual education plans, classroom management, and ensuring each student received the attention they needed. It was frustrating because, despite my best efforts, some days felt like a constant struggle. There were moments I thought, “Am I doing enough? Is this going to get better?”⁠

But slowly, things started to shift. I began building stronger connections with my students, learning their unique triggers and strengths. I adapted my teaching strategies and created a routine that worked for everyone. With patience and persistence, I could see the growth—not just in my students, but in myself as a teacher.⁠
