Description
Grammar makes more sense when students get to try it hands-on. These subject verb agreement task cards give students practice choosing the verb that matches the subject, with a printable set and three digital versions.

- 24 printable task cards: Print, laminate and use them in centers or task boxes.
- Boom Cards: Self-correcting digital cards with audio and data collection.
- Google Slides: Drag-and-drop answers that work in Google Classroom.
- Interactive PDF: Self-correcting slides that work on computers, tablets and smart boards.
How to Use the Subject Verb Agreement Task Cards
Each card shows a sentence and asks students to pick the verb that agrees with the subject. Students can clip their answer on the printable cards or tap it on the digital versions. The digital versions check the answer right away, so students know if they need to try again.
I always read the sentence out loud with both verb choices. Most students can hear which one sounds right before they can explain why.
Ways to Use the Subject Verb Agreement Task Cards in Your Classroom
- Centers: Add the printable cards to a reading or grammar center.
- Morning work: Use a few cards as a quick warm-up.
- Early finishers: Keep the cards ready for students who finish early.
- Independent work: Assign the Boom Cards or Google Slides version.
- Home: Share the digital version for practice outside of school.
Teaching Grammar With Subject Verb Agreement Task Cards
Subject verb agreement is about one simple question: is the subject one or more than one? I teach students to find the subject first, then decide if it’s one dog or two dogs, and choose the verb that goes with it. The dog runs. The dogs run. Once students hear that pattern a few times, these cards give them the repetition to make it automatic. For more ideas, read my post on using digital task cards in special education.
Who the Subject Verb Agreement Task Cards Are For
These cards work from preschool through 12th grade, wherever students are learning basic grammar, including self-contained and special education classrooms. Special education teachers, paraprofessionals and related service providers can all use them. For a clear explanation of the rules, Purdue OWL explains subject verb agreement well.
