Strategies for Counting Coins in Special Education

Sharing is caring!

Teaching academic content and concepts like counting coins in our special education classrooms is not for the weak. It’s an essential life skill that is often overlooked by the typical textbooks. It’s tricky and nuanced – but with the right resources, teachers CAN make it work! I have shared about using Unique Learning Systems to teach math skills HERE.

How Counting Coins Worksheets Came About…

counting coins worksheets

These worksheets were born out of necessity for my wide range of learners. Understanding, identifying, and counting coins are essential life skills. They aren’t always on the agenda for teaching to the standards but, in my classroom these are a MUST!

Moreover, I love how each worksheet can work for students who are directly working on counting coins. They are errorless and many ways which makes them great for some of your complex learners who you have been trying to determine the best way to expose to this type of functional content. Students focusing on one-to-one correspondence or counting objects can use them too. There are sets for each coin type, and of course a savings if you choose to purchase the bundle

Amping Up Counting Coin Worksheets

While worksheets can appear like a dull way to tackle skills, the open ended nature of this bundle is that they can be scaffolded to engage learners outside of the standard pencil and paper task. Using manipulatives or real coins alongside these worksheets can really make the material come to life.

Additionally, I also like laminating worksheets and adding them to a binder so students can reuse them regularly – dry erase pouches are great for this, too!

Be sure to take a peek into the product by watching the video preview and viewing the thumbnails, I bet you’ll find these will be the perfect fit for your classroom! Whether you are working with students that are learning the skill for the first time or you are looking for materials that students can complete independently this resource could be made for you!

Need a More Challenging Resource?

If these worksheets are too simple for your students I also have a set of worksheets for counting like coins for extra practice. They work great for when your students can’t handle counting mixed coins but they have the strategies of skip counting by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s down and can count a group of dimes all together. Check these also out if you need more materials.

Have students ready for counting combinations of coins and bills? Check out these flash cards that are in my store! They are great for working on counting groups of money with visual support! I have even taken them and added touchpoints to them for students needing that kinesthetic support!
