The first week of school, every kid in my room learns their own favorites, their own birthday, their own family. That part's easy.⁠

The part that actually builds community is when they start learning about each other.⁠

That's why this All About Me activity has a peer file folder built in. While I'm presenting the slides up front, kids fill out the dry erase file folder about a classmate instead of just themselves.

This includes two worksheets one for elementary and one for secondary students (more like an application for practice).

Your classroom schedule isn't the problem.

Nobody ever showed you how to build one for a self-contained room. So you got handed a general ed template that assumes your kids transition in under a minute and sit for 20 minute blocks.

Then Tuesday hits. It falls apart by 9:15.

The first week of school always feels the same. Yo

The first week of school always feels the same. You're trying to learn 25 names, 25 personalities, and 25 sets of "what makes this kid tick" all at once. And by week three you still don't know that one kid loves geckos and another one has a baby sister at home.

That's why I built an All About Me slideshow and interactive file folder and worksheets for both.elementary and secondary classrooms. Pop it up during morning meeting and let each kid take their turn sharing their slide.

But here's what makes this one different. It's not just a slide the class watches and moves on from. Two worksheets are included so the other students can respond to what they just learned, so it becomes an actual conversation instead of a one and done share. There's also a file folder version, so if your class needs a hands on option or you've got a kid who does better with a tactile piece in front of them, you're covered there too.

Use it the first week to break the ice. Keep using it all year during morning meeting when you need a simple, low prep way to help kids feel seen.

Grab it and watch your classroom community grow from day one.

Someone in an IEP meeting once told me to "take it

Someone in an IEP meeting once told me to "take it down a notch."

Sure. Totally hear you. I'm cranking it up like a volume button, at least 5 notches, and yes, we ARE stopping on an even number. I checked. I'm not an animal.

Here's what doesn't move for me when I'm advocating for a student with an IEP.

1. The parent's voice comes first. They know this kid longer and better than anyone else at that table.

2. Data drives the conversation, not opinions or gut feelings. If we can't show it, we can't claim it.

3. Present levels have to reflect the real kid, not the kid on paper. The one who melts down at transitions and is also the funniest human in the building at recess.

4. Goals get written to be taught, not just tracked. If it can't turn into a lesson plan, it's not a goal, it's a wish.

5. "This is how we've always done it" doesn't get a vote if it's not working for this kid.

So no, I will not be taking it down a notch. I will be on notch 6, calm, organized, and holding a folder of data. That's the whole bit.

Can we talk about the group text that never sleeps.

Between the OT, the speech therapist, the gen ed teacher next door, and every family in my caseload, I used to feel like I was running five different conversations in five different formats. A note home here. A hallway update there. A phone call I forgot to write down. And somehow nobody, including me, had the full picture.

Here's what changed things for me. Communication with your IEP team isn't just about being nice or being available. It's about making sure everyone, families included, is looking at the same information at the same time. Related service providers need to know what's working in the classroom. Gen ed teachers need to know what supports are actually happening. And families need more than a quarterly progress report to feel like they're part of the plan.

Transparency isn't extra work you add on top of your day. It's the thing that prevents the extra work. The IEP meeting that runs long because nobody's on the same page. The email chain trying to piece together what happened last Tuesday. The parent phone call that starts with "I'm confused about..."

A simple communication log fixes so much of this. One place to track what happened, what's working, and what needs to shift, so when a related service provider checks in or a family asks a question, you're not digging through sticky notes to answer it.

These are the exact logs I use in my own room and the ones I built for my TPT store and shop, made for real classroom pace, not extra paperwork for the sake of paperwork.
