I have absolutely never set up an independent work

I have absolutely never set up an independent work system that a student immediately destroyed.⁠
⁠
Never.⁠
⁠
I have never opened a task box and realized half the pieces had gone missing into the classroom void.⁠
⁠
I have never watched a student complete a task in a way I did not even know was possible.⁠
⁠
I have never spent 45 minutes making a work task that a student finished in 47 seconds.⁠
⁠
And I have definitely never thought, “Why did I laminate this many tiny pieces?” while questioning every life choice that brought me to that moment.⁠

Nope.⁠
⁠
Couldn’t be me.⁠
⁠
Except it absolutely was me.⁠
⁠
Because independent work sounds so simple until you’re actually trying to keep the system organized, teach the routine, match tasks to student levels, prevent pieces from disappearing, train staff, rotate materials, and make sure students are actually working independently instead of just looking busy with a Velcro folder.⁠
⁠
The funny parts are funny because we have lived them.⁠
⁠
But the struggle is real too.⁠
⁠
Independent work systems can be powerful in a self-contained classroom, but they need more than cute task boxes.⁠
⁠
They need a routine.⁠
⁠
They need clear expectations.⁠
⁠
They need materials students can actually use.⁠
⁠
They need staff who know how to support without overprompting.⁠
⁠
And they need a setup that does not make you feel like you’re managing a tiny warehouse out of your classroom cabinets.⁠
⁠

Not making eye contact. Not answering questions.

Not hearing “Do you have a second?” Not stopping for “real quick.”

Because we all know “real quick” is teacher code for there goes your entire planning period.

And listen… I love my students. I love my coworkers. I love being helpful.

But sometimes the most urgent IEP-related service is me sprinting down the hallway like I’m in an Olympic event called Bathroom Before the Bell. 🏃‍♀️

Teacher bladder should honestly be a documented workplace concern.

No one came to my door.⁠
⁠
No one needed help finding a missing schedule.⁠
⁠
No one asked if I had “just a quick second,” which we all know is never a quick second.⁠
⁠
No behavior support call.⁠
⁠
No IEP question.⁠
⁠
No para coverage issue.⁠
⁠
No surprise email that somehow needed an answer before the end of the day.⁠
⁠
Just me, my desk, my computer, and the kind of silence that makes you look around suspiciously because surely something is about to happen.⁠
⁠
And let me tell you.⁠
⁠
I became a different person.⁠
⁠
I updated data.⁠
⁠
I answered emails.⁠
⁠
I prepped visuals.⁠
⁠
I adjusted a schedule.⁠
⁠
I looked at IEP goals and actually thought through what needed to happen next instead of scribbling notes on the back of a random worksheet while walking down the hallway.⁠
⁠
I even drank my coffee while it was still warm.⁠
⁠
Honestly, I almost didn’t recognize myself.⁠
⁠
For that one planning period, I was organized. I was focused. I was productive. I was probably one uninterrupted hour away from solving at least three major classroom problems and maybe world peace.⁠
⁠
And then reality returned.⁠
⁠
Because that was the only full planning period I got the entire year.⁠
⁠
The entire year.⁠
⁠
So when teachers say they are behind, overwhelmed, or struggling to keep up, maybe the answer is not “manage your time better.”⁠
⁠
Maybe the answer is that their time keeps getting taken.⁠
⁠
Especially in self-contained special education classrooms, where planning time often becomes coverage time, crisis support time, meeting time, paperwork time, parent communication time, and “can you just help with this real quick?” time.⁠

Teachers are not lazy.⁠
⁠
They are trying to do a full-time job inside tiny scraps of time between everyone else’s needs.⁠
⁠
And sometimes, one uninterrupted planning period feels like a vacation.⁠
⁠
A very sad vacation.⁠
⁠
But still. A vacation.⁠
⁠
⁠

Behavior doesn’t magically disappear because we wr

Behavior doesn’t magically disappear because we wrote “make better choices” in a plan and hoped for the best.

I mean, that would be lovely. Truly. I’d also like my data sheets to complete themselves and my laminator to stop eating corners.

But most behavior is telling us something. The student may need a way to ask for help, take a break, wait, accept no, transition, handle frustration, or communicate something that is coming out sideways.

So yes, we can want the behavior to decrease.

But we also have to teach the skill we want to see instead.

Model it. Practice it. Prompt it. Reinforce it. Repeat it approximately 400 times while questioning all of our life choices.

That’s the work.

Actually, especially in teaching.⁠
⁠
Because somehow “being a good teacher” got tangled up with answering messages at 9:42 p.m., saying yes to every extra thing, skipping lunch, staying late, and feeling guilty for needing five minutes to breathe.⁠
⁠
Nope.⁠
⁠
Boundaries do not mean you don’t care.⁠
⁠
They mean you are trying to stay well enough to keep showing up.⁠
⁠
You can care about your students and still protect your planning time.⁠
⁠
You can support families and still have communication hours.⁠
⁠
You can be a team player and still say, “I can’t take that on right now.”⁠
⁠
You can love your job and still need a life outside of it.⁠
⁠
Healthy boundaries help you teach from a place of clarity instead of exhaustion.⁠
⁠
And honestly, we need more of that.⁠
⁠
Not more teacher guilt wrapped up in a cute inspirational quote.⁠
⁠

Your para is great. They show up, they care, they want to help. But every 10 minutes they need to check in with you — because the system for what they're supposed to be doing isn't clear enough to run on its own.⁠

So you're pulled out of your small group. Again. Out of your 1:1. Again. Interrupted mid-IEP data collection. Again.⁠
⁠
And at the end of the day you're exhausted, and you're not even sure why, because technically you had another adult in the room.⁠
⁠
This is one of those problems that sounds like a staffing problem but is actually a systems problem.⁠
⁠
When your para knows exactly what to do, when to do it, and what to do when a student finishes early — everything shifts. You get to actually teach. They get to actually support. Your students get what they need.⁠
