You won’t always get to see it. The skill that finally clicks two years later. The student who remembers your name forever. The family who still talks about the year you had their child.

But it’s happening. Every single day.

Tag a special education teacher or para who deserves to know they’re making a difference, and share this to your stories so it reaches someone who needs it.

Principal: “How’s it going?”
Me, mid-whitewater, paddle in one hand, data sheet in the other: “Great!”

Tag the coworker who’s been paddling with you since August.

My students could count money. Dimes, quarters, dollar bills, all of it. On a worksheet, they nailed it every time.

Then we went to the store. And they froze at the register.

Because counting money and using money are two completely different skills. In real life, nobody asks “how much is this?” They ask “do I have enough?” And if students have never practiced making that decision, the moment it actually matters, they panic.

So I built this. Students look at the price, look at what they have, and decide yes or no. It’s simple, it’s visual, and it practices the exact thinking they need standing at a real checkout line. Perfect for life skills, community-based instruction prep, or a quick independent work task.

This resource is a Teach Love Resource Membership exclusive, and here’s the part you don’t want to miss: it’s included free for members only during October. After this month, it stays in the membership, but you’ll have to buy it with your member discount.

So if you’ve been thinking about joining, this is your month. Comment MEMBERSHIP and I’ll send you everything you need to know.

I think we've all worked for a principal who needed to remember what it's like to teach in the classroom.

And also one that totally gets it and was your strongest supporter!

Rule 5 is the only one I didn't have to learn the

Rule 5 is the only one I didn't have to learn the hard way. Actually no, I learned that one too.

Every rule on this list came from a real day in my classroom. I said "it's been such a quiet day" out loud once. Once. I changed a schedule without a visual. My para stood in the back of the room for 20 minutes because I never told her what that block was for. And I walked into an IEP meeting without my data exactly one time.

But Rule 6 is the one I want you to hear. Self-contained teaching can feel like you're on an island. You're managing IEPs, behaviors, paras, and families, and most of the building has no idea what your day actually looks like. You don't have to do it alone. Find your people. Online counts.

Save this for the week before Halloween. You're going to need Rule 1.

Throwback to the day I realized my classroom vocab

Throwback to the day I realized my classroom vocabulary could be a full emo album.

“We are not licking that.” “Shoes stay on our feet.” “Why is it wet?” Sentences I never once imagined saying out loud when I was sitting in my college education classes. And yet here we are, belting them out with feeling.

Here’s the thing: nobody warns you that teaching in a self-contained classroom comes with its own language. Half of it is dead serious and the other half sounds completely unhinged out of context. Both are part of the job. And honestly, finding the funny in it is what got me through some of the hardest days.

Share this with the teacher or para who’s said at least three of these before lunch. And follow along for more real (and occasionally ridiculous) life in the self-contained classroom.

I used to spend my Sunday nights making adapted books for every single WH question goal on my caseload. Different levels, different students, and somehow none of them ever fit everyone in my room.

Here’s the thing: WH questions show up in almost every IEP in a self-contained classroom. And students need a lot of repetition with real pictures before “who” and “where” finally click.

So I built a set that works for the whole room. Every book uses real photos, comes with leveled versions, and includes picture choices so students who don’t speak can still show you what they know. No screens. No rebuilding them every year.

Swipe through to see all five.

Then comment BOOKS and I’ll send you the link to the full WH Question Adapted Book Bundle.
