I’ll never forget my first year of teaching. I was so eager to dive in and make every lesson perfect, but something kept slipping through the cracks: organization. The piles of papers on my desk, the disorganized shelves, the frantic rush to find the right resource at the last minute—it was overwhelming. It felt like I was constantly playing catch-up, and I wasn’t able to be as present for my students as I wanted to be.⁠

Then, one day, I took a step back and realized something: A cluttered classroom leads to a cluttered mind. If I could get organized, I could create a space where both my students AND I could thrive. So, I started small. I created a filing system for my resources, organized my classroom library by level, and set up bins for easy access to daily supplies.⁠

The difference was night and day. Suddenly, I had more time to focus on what really mattered—teaching and connecting with my students. My classroom felt calmer, and I felt more confident in my ability to lead.⁠

Classroom organization is more than just tidying up—it’s about creating a space that supports learning and helps you stay focused on your students’ needs. When everything has a place, there’s less stress and more time for the important things.⁠

Just know that it doesn't mean you are a bad teacher if your planning periods are a break and not as productive as they could be.. Sometimes that break is what we need to finish teaching that day..

TRUE STORY -- I get it, you don't know what it's like teaching special education. I don't expect you to, but I do ask that you don't judge what takes place in my classroom.

Ask me questions about what my students are good at..

Ask me what is difficult for them..

Ask me about the different ways my students communicate..

Ask me to help you better understand the IEPs that the learners included in your classroom have...

Ask me how you can support me if it seems like something isn't going as planned when you hear yelling across the hall..

But jokingly judging me and what goes on in my classroom isn't fair, until you come over and join us for a lesson or two. Take the time to learn my students names and wave 👋 to them in passing in the hallway. Ask if we can do collaborative activities together to help all students understand the differences we all have...

I promise we work hard, just might look a little different. 🩷🩷🩷
