Using Technology to Help Students to be Work-Ready

Sharing is caring!

Have you wanted to help students to become work-ready but struggled to find the materials to do it? I’ve got some exciting news because I have found the perfect resource for just that!

Introducing Digitability!

help students be work ready

Digitability is a transition curriculum that teaches digital literacy and work-ready skills to people with cognitive disabilities. Their award-winning platform prepares students for our tech-driven society and aligns Individual Education Program goals with project-based learning. This increases outcomes and enables students to successfully transition into the workforce as self-advocates.

The Transition Curriculum to Help Students

Digitablility has a STEM-based curriculum that provides an innovative solution to individuals with disabilities. Digitability helps students to be prepared to enter the workforce with skills that matter. Inside their curriculum, you can find lessons on various subjects. These lessons help students with a real-world experience through simulations using evidence-based practices.

Some of the topics covered in these lessons include; financial literacy, resume and interviewing skills, online safety, self-regulation, and self-advocacy in the workplace, time management, and problem-solving. The entire curriculum has 4 different levels to meet the varying needs of the students in your classroom. It starts with the basics of learning about what the internet is to using programs that companies will want their employees to know and understand when hired.

Virtual Banking App to Help Students

bankability app for financial literacy

Alongside the curriculum is the virtual banking system that Digitability uses to expose students to financial literacy and workplace behavior. They call it Bankability. Bankability has virtual money that students can earn to exhibit appropriate workplace behavior in the classroom. The students will receive deposits into their accounts just like a paycheck! Then from there they can check their bank statements and pay bills, and make purchases just like in real life! You know I love a good digital tool that increases students’ independence!

Additionally, Bankability also has a component that allows teachers to track their students progress. It molds together with their Individual Education Program and Transition Goal Bank. This allows teachers to take data on their student’s progress and workplace readiness skills. Then tie that directly to their student’s school education plan to prepare them for their future outside of the classroom. It has the ability to create reports that can be shared with the student’s Special Education Team in meetings and transition planning meetings too!

Workplace Simulations Bring it all to Life!

Not only can you use the curriculum, and the banking app, but you can use the Work Simulations that Digitability has for setting up a classroom business and giving your students the ability to practice workplace behavior, manage tasks, use technology independently, self-regulate, and more. By utilizing a project-based learning model you can help students get the experience they need for their career adventures!

All you do is set up your project, and jump into the steps of completing the four phases, including making a website for your business with your students and then running it! Some of the work simulation sites created have been for school-run coffee shops, school supply stores, community gardens, food truck businesses, bakeries, and more!

How do I check out Digitability?

In conclusion, Digitability has so much to offer teachers in supporting students in building the transition skills that they will need for life. This includes opportunities to learn the workplace skills they need to hold competitive employment in their communities. I highly recommend checking out what Digitability has to offer by heading to their website to take a look at their informational packet and request a demo of their materials and resources.
